PhD diary
A journey as a doctoral student between 2017 and 2020. I keep these posts because, looking back from my early days, I can see how much my perspectives have shifted as a reminder of the learning journey.

Hong Kong
If I had gone to Hong Kong alone, my eight-day stay would have been very different. I would have spent most of my time at the conference, and in the evenings, stayed in my hotel room and worked. Because Luca joined me for the entire trip, we toured Hong Kong together. We went to Victoria read more

Weeks 127 and 128: My fourth conference
I returned to the UK on Saturday evening after a 12-hour KLM flight from Hong Kong (transferring at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport). I had little time to recuperate before I was back at work on Monday. Before flying to Hong Kong, Week 127 was spent preparing teaching materials for teachers who agreed to cover my classes read more

Supervision meeting reports
I am reading through all the supervision meeting reports I’ve made over the past two and a half years. It feels like reading another diary of my PhD journey, filled with lots of suggestions and feedback from my supervisors. This enriches my motivation to write chapter drafts. On 1st May, I cooked Japanese red bean rice, Osekihan, to celebrate the new Reiwa Imperial Era in Japan. I love the tradition that Japanese people cook and eat Osekihan at home on special occasions such as New Year’s Day, an engagement or wedding, the birth of a child, and birthdays at the ages of read more

Weeks 120 and 121: Step by step
I returned to the UK last weekend, having spent three weeks in Japan. Over the last two weeks, I had a hectic schedule sorting out business stuff and completing my chapter draft, etc. But, overall, my holiday in Japan was fantastic. Spending time with my family and close friends was the highlight, and I made read more

Weeks 118 and 119: A linguist’s perspective – A sci-fi film, Arrival
I’ve been staying in Tokyo for my holiday. It was lovely that we had the cherry blossoms at their best in Tokyo last weekend. My current work is compiling transcripts for my analysis chapter. This includes listening to audio data and looking at transcripts closely, repeatedly and persistently. This is something of a mechanical process. read more
