The Thames Foyer room is the place for Afternoon Tea at The Savoy. The atmosphere is exquisite, but at the same time, very relaxing. On my 40th birthday, we booked a table for 5 pm. We selected traditional high tea because it consists mostly of savoury dishes. Another option, traditional afternoon tea, has more sweet pastries.
In the centre of the room, there is a gazebo, which sits under a beautiful glass-domed ceiling. The gazebo is the home of the pianist, who, later on, played the happy birthday song. I loved that the pianist played You are so beautiful following the birthday song.
We first started with glasses of Louis Roederer Brut Premier. Our main waiter also served us camomile tea, infused for 4 hours in cold water. This was very refreshing and ensured that we relaxed.
Green is the theme colour of The Savoy. The fabric, cups and plates all have a light green colour. One of the most stunning aspects was the silverware, teapots, tea strainer and cutlery, which looked well-used and genuinely antique.
They have a wide selection of tea to choose from. Luca had Savoy Afternoon Tea, and I had Earl Grey.
The first course was a beautiful tray of finger sandwiches and savoury tart. They were all excellent, and our favourite was the coronation chicken sandwich.
The pianist started playing the happy birthday song, and our waitress brought me a slice of mango cake with a candle and a birthday card from the Thames Foyer team. She said, “make a wish”. These happy moments were followed by the main course, grilled quail. The flavour and texture were fantastic.
The main course was followed by their signature homemade scones and pastries presented on a cake stand. The classic strawberry jam, clotted cream and lemon curd were also homemade and tasted lovely. I really loved the order in which the dishes arrived.
The high tea was a really romantic and relaxing experience and was very fulfilling. The service was attentive and friendly. I highly recommend the traditional high tea for people who are not the biggest fan of sweet pastries.
After leaving the Thames Foyer at eight o’clock, we had a nice long walk along the River Thames.
